Q&A with Internationally Qualified Nurses and Midwives: Maeve

Where did you train and qualify as a nurse/midwife?
Body

Limerick, Ireland.

What made you decide to move to Australia and practice as an RN/RM?
Body

Work conditions in healthcare system in Ireland aren’t ideal – there is no patient ratios and minimal use of bank/agency workforce to support staff deficits leaving the permanent staff under more pressure.

What are some of the main differences you noticed about practicing in healthcare in Australia vs where you trained overseas?
Body

There is much more support and opportunities for career progression here in Australia than I would have been afforded in Ireland.

What are your thoughts on settling into nursing/midwifery life in Australia?
Body

Buddy up with some other Internataional trained practitioners, there is usually plenty around!

What advice would you have for any nurses/midwives recently arrived in Australia or thinking of moving here to work?
Body

If it is on your mind, go for it you can always go home if it isn’t for you!
